I’ve tried dieting in the past but most of the time my efforts were in vain because I either find myself too busy or too lazy to commit to a strict regimen. I did a month of dieting back in January and the results were acceptable to say the least. It was only a cut-rice-intake diet and it wasn’t something I could consistently sustain. But now, since I have all the time in the world to do whatever I want, I decided to give it another try. Fortunately this time, I wasn’t alone. My dad was willing to participate in my little week-long experiment.
Enter the GM Diet (General Motors Diet). It was a diet cooked up (no pun intended) by General Motors for their employees way back in 1985. It’s supposed to help one lose 10-17 lbs. after 7 days. The results were tempting so I jumped on the idea that maybe I could lose 10-17 lbs. myself.
The diet plan tells you that you must consume at least 10 glasses of water a day and eat appropriately – which means when you go hungry, go eat but eat only what is set on that particular day.
Monday:
- All fresh fruits except bananas
Tuesday:
- Large baked potato for breakfast
- Vegetables for the rest of the day, raw or cooked
Wednesday:
- Mix of fruits and vegetables – no bananas yet
Thursday:
- Bananas
- Three glasses of milk – 1 per meal
Friday:
- Beef and tomatoes – 6 large tomatoes total
- Cottage cheese
- Add 2-3 glasses of water to the regular intake
Saturday:
- Beef, chicken, fish – eat to your stomach’s content
- Vegetables raw or cooked
Sunday:
- Brown rice – the only rice you’ll eat in the week, on the very last day
- Vegetables raw or cooked
- No sugar fruit juices – no other kind of juices before this day
This was the diet plan. Before I tell you the results, I’d like to share what I personally did for the whole week last week.
Monday:
- Fresh melons, apples, mangoes, grapes
Tuesday:
- Baked potatoes for breakfast
- Green salad the rest of the day w/ balsamic vinaigrette for the dressing
Wednesday:
- Fruit cocktail
- Green salad w/ balsamic vinaigrette
Thursday:
- Bananas and 4 glasses of milk
Friday:
- Homemade burger w/ tomatoes
- Sirloin steak w/ mashed potato and a bottomless glass of iced tea from Pancake House
Saturday:
- Lots of beef and chicken
- Lots of vegetables
- A bit of leche flan
Sunday:
- Brown rice
- Chop suey
- No sugar grape and orange juice
- 3 slices of buko pie
Obviously I wasn’t able to follow the plan – yet again. I went to Makati last Friday to get some papers from my former office hence the Pancake House. I went to a fiesta in Sta. Rita, Pampanga, last Saturday that’s why the leche flan’s there. And my dad came home from Laguna yesterday (Sunday) bringing buko pie. I was only able to consume an average amount of 6 glasses of water per day for the whole week. Yeah, what a plan indeed. Now, I didn’t lose the guaranteed 10-17 lbs. after the diet week, I wouldn’t be surprised why. But the diet did have an effect – I’m 7 lbs. lighter.
All in all I’d say the GM diet plan is effective – if you strictly follow it. I guess it’s back to my normal eating habits now. So much for that diet.

That’s 10-17lbs of Water, not fat deposits. That’s really common among, I’m afraid I’d have to break your bubble, “Diet Only” fads. Wow you lost 10-20lbs. within the next week. Dehydration, irregular bowel movement or ulcer follows. >.> Why don’t you instead retain or gain weight but with lower fat percentage ratio? Besides, you’re a natural ecto-mesomorph like me.
Healthy lifestyle involves = Eat, workout and sleep. The only way to burn fat is to either use it as a fuel to your muscle thru anaerobic exercises or deplete your body’s glycogen supply through endurance exhaustion before it finally taps to your muscular/fat deposits.
